Let's pay attention to the sights of such a wonderful country as Georgia. In this article we will discuss what to see in Georgia, what are the most beautiful places there.
There are many different memorable places in this country, one of them is the Pitaret Monastery.
About the monastery
The monastery is located in the Ktsia Gorge of Tetritskaro District, which is in eastern Georgia. At present, the monastery is active, subordinate to the Diocese of Manglis and Tsalka.
The complex of structures of the Pitaret Temple includes:
- church
- bell tower
- wine cellar
- fortress wall
- platform
- tomb
- Various agricultural buildings, some of which are damaged.
History of Pitaret Monastery
The monastery was built in 1213-1222. A simple inscription on the wall reports that George IV, the ruler of these places, erected a temple in honor of Our Lady.
In 1752, the Pitaret fortress was attacked by a Lezgian army of many thousands. During its conquest, they captured many people, plundered the church and destroyed it.
Due to the large number of raids and looting, there are almost no relics preserved from ancient times.
Architecture
Some tombstones have survived in the decoration of the fortress, with historical references. Of all of them, the Kaflan tombstone is particularly interesting; the inscription on it reads: "Thanks to God I, son of Orbeli, Kaplan, have rebuilt the monastery for the second time and restored my fatherland, which had been destroyed by enemy invasions.
After the event referred to in the tombstone, the temple became the personal tomb of his family.
Also in the decoration of Pitareti there is a variety of ornamentation, which is what this fortress is famous for. The peculiarity of the ornamentation is its precise and subtle execution, which distinguishes it from other similar buildings.
The Pitaret Monastery differs from other churches of a similar type in its almost square shape. The building has a single entrance, from the south. The vastness of the temple is clearly visible in the underdome space, where lancet arches sharply raise the dome in height. The altar and altar are connected by small rooms which are lit from the east.
When examining the temple, it is impossible not to be amazed by the inexhaustible imagination of the carvers who work the stone: the facades are covered with a variety of plant, geometric ornaments. For their proper perception you need bright sunlight, because they are focused on the play of light.
Anyone visiting Georgia should definitely see the beauty of Pitaret Monastery with their own eyes.
