Tsugrugasheni Monastery in Bolnisi: History & Route

In the southwestern corner of Georgia lies the picturesque Tsugrugasheni Monastery, a 13th-century example of early medieval architecture. The area surrounding the monastery deserves special mention, as the building stands on a mountainside, towering over the rest of the valley and the banks of the Tskali River. The walls are covered in inscriptions, mentioning figures such as King George and the church's builder, A. Hasan. These inscriptions have allowed scholars to date the construction to the thirteenth century, during the reign of King George Lash (1212–1222).

Georgia's landmarks are often shrouded in mystery and legend, and the same can be said about the Tsugrugasheni Monastery. The monastery contains a secret compartment: on the south side, near the entrance door, is a small, fist-sized cavity containing the Bolnisi Cross, surrounded by ornaments and a Georgian inscription. In addition to the secret compartment, ornaments can be found on the interior walls, and the monastery's interior is also rich in religious scenes and icons. Legend

According to legend, the purpose of the secret compartment was to preserve the traditions and sovereignty of the Georgian people. During the church's construction, conflicts between Georgians and other nationalities flared up repeatedly. This secret compartment was created so that the Georgians could find refuge and protection in times of danger.
