Birtvisi: an Impregnable Fortress in the Mountains of Georgia

The trail leading to Birtvisi Fortress is unmarked. However, it is one of the most popular routes among Georgian hikers. The fortress is 3.5 km from the nearest settlement.

Millions of years ago, the Trialeti Range was covered by lava flows erupting from the earth during an active volcanic eruption. Subsequent natural phenomena (rain, wind, erosion) changed the landscape. On the Trialeti Range, to the right of the Algeti River, in the area of ​​Birtvisi, views of isolated cliffs, elevated volcanic hills, and mounds are found, among several such natural pillars.

In the cone-shaped, inaccessible Birtvisi Mountains, a natural refuge in itself, stands a fortress of the same name, considered the most impregnable fortress in the country. The exact date of the fortress's construction is unknown, although it is first mentioned in historical sources in the 11th century. The fortress stands on one of the peaks. The fortress's builders cleverly exploited the terrain's complexities: using a natural fortification located between inaccessible mountains as a model, they connected the line of the mountains with a wall. The fortress can be accessed via steps carved into the rock. The narrow entrance door is located inside. The interior consists of a small courtyard with an artificially leveled area, where, along with defensive structures, the ruins of residential and outbuildings, including a reservoir, have been preserved. At the highest point of the fortress stands the "Sheupavari" ("Invincible") tower, from which the surrounding area is clearly visible.

One of the most powerful and brutal conquerors in world history, Tamerlane, attempted to take the fortress seven times between 1386 and 1403, but the defenders managed to repel the attackers on all seven occasions. Only during his final, eighth campaign did Tamerlane achieve his goal: after a three-week siege, his soldiers managed to infiltrate the fortress through cunning. As a result, the fortress fell to the enemy for the first time in its history.

Today, the fortress is in a dilapidated state, but its former grandeur has not diminished and still impresses tourists. If you reach the top where the structure is located, you'll feel an incredible surge of energy, as the energy of this place is off the charts.
