Armazi Fortress: 13th-Century Watchtowers over an Old Road

The Armazi Fortress is a monument located in the Armaziskhevi River gorge, on one of Georgia's highest mountains. It was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Today, the fortress is one of Georgia's most beautiful places and a major tourist attraction.

The fortress once blocked the road that connected Georgia with other Caucasian countries.

The monument consists of several buildings—towers and a fence surrounding the fortress. The main building material is rubble. Today, the fortress is heavily damaged, but tourists continue to come and enjoy the natural surroundings.

The main tower is located in the southern part of the ancient monument; it is triangular in shape with rounded corners. It is impossible to enter the tower itself; the floors between the first and second floors have collapsed, blocking the staircase. Only the southern wall of the third floor remains; traces indicate that the entrance was from the southeast.

In the river valley are two structures: the Monastery of the Mother of God and Armazi Castle. At the confluence of the rivers stands a monument, Armaziskhevi, which is currently a field museum. To the east stands the idol of Armazi.

How to get there.

The trail begins from the remains of the Pitiakhsh Palace, Armaziskhevi, where the entrance to the Armazi Fortress is located. In front of the castle itself stands the Monastery of the Mother of God, where a path leads to the summit—the main castle.

Another route is approximately 3 kilometers long, beginning at the confluence of the rivers, where a railway line runs. Along the way, you can find numerous resting places.
