Goubani Ormotsni: Ancient Church Complex in Georgia

Kvemo Kartli is a picturesque region in southeastern Georgia, boasting rich natural beauty, a fascinating history, and numerous attractions, one of which is Goubani Ormotsni.

Goubani Ormotsni is a monument of Georgian architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries. This late-medieval structure is located in the Tetritskaro Municipality, specifically in the Kojori Forest, 3 kilometers from the small village of Goubani. The ancient stone fortress of Korogli also stands nearby. Some sources date this structure to the 9th or 10th century, making it a worthwhile place to visit in Georgia.

Georgian landmarks often have a rich and fascinating history or legend, and Goubani Ormotsni is no exception. This temple complex was built in honor of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste.

Architecture

The church is built according to all the canons of the Kuppelhalle. This type of church is distinguished by the structure of the building's support: here, the supports are the wall projections, not columns or plinths. There are approximately 20 other examples of this type of church in Georgia.

A semicircular apse is located near the altar, flanked on both sides by rectangular pastophores. Inside, the altar is attached to the altar, with exits on both sides. The dome, crowning the church's summit, rests on the plinth, the corners of the altar, and the projections of the longitudinal walls. The church has two entrances: one enters through the gates of the adjacent bell tower, the other opens onto the western side of the building.

The central part of the church complex extends into two wings, with windows illuminating the space from the west and north. Sunlight also enters from beneath the eight domed windows, arranged around the entire circumference of the vault. The church's exterior facades are sparsely decorated, with the most architecturally interesting composition located inside the building.

The interior walls are decorated with stucco depicting saints and religious scenes from the Holy Scriptures. Arches, some shaped like lancets, are positioned beneath the dome, framing the walls. Due to its venerable age, the church has been frequently restored. During restoration work, the roof was restored on one wall above the western facade, its slopes joined together to form a gabled deck.

Originally, the entire composition featured a central element, the church. Later, additions to the main building, including towers and a bell tower, were added. The additions to the west and north sides are now invisible, having fallen into ruin. A massive stone tower stands to the south of the church; its construction occurred later than the other elements of the temple complex.

The unusual architecture, dense green forest, and rich history of this place explain why travelers consider Goubani "Ormotsni" one of the most beautiful places in Georgia.

How to get there?

The church is very easy to reach. If you have your own or rented car, you can drive 6 km off the Tbilisi-Tetritskaro highway; there's a causeway from the village of Goubani that leads directly to the church.
