Church of the Apostle Peter in Vedzhini: History and Architecture
A small church resembling the basilica of St. Peter the Apostle is nestled in the mountains, hidden among the trees. This is how Georgia's most beautiful places remain hidden from prying eyes.
Location: Kakheti Region, Gurjaani Municipality, Vedjini village.
It was built in the 16th century, but four centuries later, it began to crumble. In 1976, the church's arch collapsed, and perhaps all would have been well, but some time later, a tractor drove into the church, causing the northern wall and one of the entrances to collapse.
The second entrance is located on the western side. Near each entrance are tombstones detailing the burial history. Judging from the church's appearance, it's clear that it has undergone previous reconstruction.
The Church of St. Peter the Apostle is built of stone, but if you look at the central arch and the entrance's decoration, you'll notice brickwork embedded among the stones. These modifications likely occurred in the 16th century to strengthen the structure. Or perhaps this is a sign that the church was partially rebuilt.

Georgia's landmarks are diverse, and this church's unique feature is its basilica-style architecture. For this region, this means the church is built in a simple rectangular shape, with two rows of columns inside. Apparently, due to its age, the columns had to be plastered.
Each exterior wall has false windows—niches in the walls that replicate the size and shape of the window. Don't think someone blocked them up. No, this is an architectural design. The doors still retain the huge ring-handles or knockers that were traditionally used to announce one's arrival.
This is practically an ancient version of a doorbell. So, upon arriving here, you'll feel like a visitor from the future, touching the ancient past.
The church has no tower and never had a bell. But it was functional. Apparently, young parents came here for their children's baptisms and also for Easter. The church has now been restored and is open to the public.
We hope we've been helpful in answering your question, "What to see in Georgia?"
