Archangel Church in Kvibisi: History, Frescoes & Route
The Kvibisi Church is a medieval monument located in the village of Kvibisi. Scholars estimate the construction date of the Kvibisi Archangel Church to be the 12th century, though the exact date is unknown.
The church is a hall-type structure. On the south side, it has an extension that extends the entire length of the facades. The interior of the main hall ends with a semicircular apse to the east.
The longitudinal walls are divided by pilasters. On the western side of the structure is an arch supported by brackets. The barrel vault of the southern extension rests on an arch suspended by brackets.
The church's openings are simple. The main hall and annex each have a single entrance on the south side, each marked by a beautiful stone placed at the apex of the opening.
The cathedral has seven rectangular windows, cornice shelves, and a slightly curved, recessed profile. The interior walls of the building are entirely painted in multicolored shades and decorated with frescoes.
The building was constructed of roughly hewn stone of varying sizes. The main hall is covered with a two-tiered tin roof, while the annex itself has a single roof.
Outside the church is a courtyard surrounded by a low stone wall. This cathedral is distinguished by its unique proportions and superb construction craftsmanship.
