The church of St. George of Lomisa in the southern part of Akhmeta is a church whose name points to Lomisa, one of the most venerated shrines of mountain Georgia. The veneration of St. George of Lomisa long ago stepped beyond Mtiuleti, and the Akhmeta church is living proof of it on the Kakhetian plain.
Lomisoba, the summer feast of St. George of Lomisa, gathers pilgrims from all over eastern Georgia, and in those days the church’s name sounds especially loud. On weekdays it is a well-kept church in quiet quarters, away from the central street.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a headscarf for women, silence during a service. On the days of Lomisoba the church is crowded: for a calm visit choose an ordinary day, when the yard is empty and only birds are heard.
