The Archangels church complex on the south-eastern edge of Akhmeta is a working church yard of a town at the entrance to the Pankisi gorge. The place is calm and shaded, with the ordinary parish life of a Kakhetian district town: services, christenings, neighbours in the yard.
Akhmeta is the gateway to mountain Tusheti and Pankisi, and the church complex on the edge sets a calm tone for this road fork. A few minutes from the town centre, a shaded yard with benches and quiet before the long road into the mountains, where the asphalt soon ends.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a headscarf for women, silence during a service. The feast of the Archangels in November gathers the whole town by the complex.
