The church known as Tsikhijvari was placed on a rise above the quarters of Akhmeta. The name joins the Georgian words for fortress and cross, and such names usually attach to churches on fortified heights.
The terrace in front of the church opens a view over Akhmeta and the Alazani valley. The climb is short but steep, and the path turns slippery in rain. Residential streets begin below, forest above.
Photography inside is best agreed with whoever looks after the church. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Leave spare time for the climb.
- In summer bring a hat, as there is almost no shade.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Leave the car at the nearest street and continue on foot.
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
