The church dedicated to Saint Barbara stands in the residential part of Akhmeta, not far from the bank of the Alazani. In Kakheti Barbara is venerated as a protector in sudden misfortune, and churches carrying her name are found in many villages of the region.
Akhmeta is the centre of a large mountain municipality: ridges and forest take up nearly all of its area, while the inhabited part keeps to the Alazani plain. The road to Tusheti over the Abano pass and the entrance to the Pankisi gorge both start here. The town has a local history museum, and vineyards stretch around it.
Modest clothing is expected, with shoulders and knees covered. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
