The church dedicated to Saint George stands in the northern part of the Gulgula area, about seven hundred metres from the Nagebi church. Saint George is the principal saint of Kakheti and his churches stand in almost every village of the region.
Gulgula holds several church sites: besides this one and the Nagebi church, a Kviratskhoveli church is marked in the area. The village belongs to Telavi Municipality, to the foothills above the Alazani plain. The forest comes up to the yards and the roads are narrow.
Enter quietly if the door is open, and do not disturb those at prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
