The church is dedicated to St Gregory of Khandzta, one of the saints venerated in Georgia. It stands in Zahesi, a settlement on the northern edge of Tbilisi, and serves as an active parish.
Zahesi grew up around the Zemo Avchala hydro station on the Mtkvari, and takes its name from it. Mtskheta is about four kilometres away by road, closer than the centre of Tbilisi.
Visits are free and modest dress is appropriate for services. A headscarf is useful for women, and quiet is expected inside.
