📍Tbilisi is a city that can be read like a book. Traces of almost every era have been preserved here: from fortress walls to futuristic buildings made of glass and metal. We have collected 12 iconic points that will help you understand how the city has changed and why it became the way it is loved today.
🏰 Medieval architecture of Tbilisi: stone, slope and thousand-year-old planning
When talking about old Tbilisi, they most often mean not only its age, but also its architecture, which has preserved the appearance of the era from the 6th to the 13th centuries. Everything here is built on the slopes: narrow streets wind between houses, stone supports turn into pavements, and the walls seem to grow out of the mountain itself.
🏯 Main features: massive foundations, limestone and basalt, windows without glass, vaults, arched passages. Many elements are original, others are carefully restored.
📜 Some of the buildings were built during the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali. They were not rebuilt, but only supplemented, which makes the architecture of Tbilisi multi-layered and alive.
💡 Tip: pay attention to the details of the facades: secret staircases, crosses knocked out on the walls, old doors with hand-forged nails - these are not decorations, but real traces of time.
🎒 For a walk, it is better to choose comfortable shoes with non-slip soles - the sidewalks can be steep and not always smooth.
📸 The best shots are on the streets of Betlemi, Shavteli and in the area of the sulfur baths. The combination of ancient forms and city life creates a feeling of a real journey through time.

Review from a reader of the catalogue
Daniel Hoffman, Vienna (Austria)
"Tbilisi was a real discovery for me. Walking along the streets, I felt as if I had entered a living encyclopedia of architecture: from the carved balconies of the old city to monumental monuments and modern buildings. I was especially impressed by the Peace Bridge and the Rustaveli Theatre. It was easy to plan a walk with the guide from Madloba - everything is clear, convenient and without wasting time. Tbilisi surprised me with the harmony of styles and warm atmosphere - this is a city you want to return to. Even a short walk turns into a journey through time. And the photos taken here have become the highlight of my album"

🎩 19th century: when Tbilisi became a city of facades and balconies
The 19th century became the era of transformation of Tbilisi from an eastern fortress city into a multifaceted European-Caucasian center with the ambitions of a capital. Stone apartment buildings, administrative mansions, theaters, boulevards and — most memorable — wooden carved balconies appeared here, which became the calling card of the city.
🏛 Main features: symmetry of facades, stucco, French and Russian architectural influences, neoclassicism, art deco, and in residential buildings — fine carving, glass galleries and courtyards-wells.
🪟 It was in the 19th century that the image of Tbilisi as a city of balconies was formed — decorative, openwork, multi-colored. These balconies are not only an architectural element, but also a way of communication: neighbors talked directly from them. 📍 A walk along Rustaveli Avenue, Sololaki district or Gudeashvili and Dadiani streets will show you dozens of such buildings, each with its own character.
💡 Tip: look into the courtyards. That's where the real atmosphere of old Tbilisi of the 19th century is: stairs, internal columns, common balconies and shady grape vines.
📸 The best time to photograph 19th-century architecture is in the morning or during the "golden hour": soft light emphasizes the relief of the facades and creates the feeling of an old postcard.

🏛️ 20th century: ambitions, modernism and traces of the Soviet era
The 20th century left no less noticeable architectural trace in Tbilisi than the eras before it. In this century, the city experienced modernization, industrialization, and then became a showcase of the Soviet style: from Stalin's Empire style to brutal constructivism.
🏢 Carved balconies were replaced by massive facades, strict geometry, buildings with columns and bas-reliefs. In the 1930s–1950s, monumental theaters, hotels, and residential buildings on the avenues were built. Later, box-shaped houses, Palaces of Culture, and the first experimental projects in the style of late modernism.
📍 Some of the most striking examples are the Palace of Arts, Tbilisi Hogwarts, the Puppet Theater, and metro stations with mosaics. The city got a second wind: it became more spacious, more formal, and larger.
💡 Tip: pay attention to the mosaics and sculptures on the ends of the houses - many of them tell about professions, era or Soviet aesthetics.
🚶 The best routes are along Rustaveli Avenue, Marjanishvili and Tsereteli streets.
📸 Morning is suitable for a photo walk: concrete forms are beautifully "read" in soft light, especially against the background of greenery or a cloudy sky.

🏙️ 21st Century: Tbilisi of the New Age – Glass, Lines and Freedom of Form
Since the early 2000s, Tbilisi has been actively rethinking its urban appearance. The city is opening up to the world, and along with this, new buildings in the style of high-tech, organic architecture and minimalism are appearing. This is not just a construction for the sake of beauty - it is an attempt to declare modern Georgia: open, dynamic, bold.
🏗 The 21st century buildings here are, above all, non-standard forms. The House of Justice in the form of white leaves, the pedestrian Bridge of Peace - a light, almost airy dome over the Kura, observation platforms, cultural spaces in glass and concrete. Many projects were created with the participation of international architects.
🌉 These buildings blend perfectly with the historical background, and sometimes - deliberately contrast with it, emphasizing how far Tbilisi has come forward.
💡 Tip: modern objects look especially beautiful in the evening - with lighting and reflections in the water.
📍 Take a stroll along the embankment from Rike Park to the House of Justice, visit new art centers or go up to Mother Georgia to see how the past and the future live in one frame.
📸 The best photos are by the Bridge of Peace at sunset, in the media library in Vake, against the glass facades of the Kura embankment area or along Kostava Street. The 21st century architecture in Tbilisi is especially expressive from a low angle, when the lines of the buildings go into the sky and emphasize the dynamics of the city. Shoot in the evening or against a cloudy sky - it will look stylish and atmospheric.

Review from a reader of the catalogue
Léa Martin, Lyon
"Modern Tbilisi was a real discovery for me - the city is not afraid to combine the past with the future, and this is evident literally at every step. The walk from the Bridge of Peace to the House of Justice was like a tour of an open-air exhibition of modern architecture. I was very impressed by the lighting in the evening: the buildings seem to come alive and become part of the city rhythm. Reflections in the water and the play of light make the photos especially expressive - I wanted to photograph every minute. Thanks to the article on Madloba, I knew in advance which points should not be missed, and this made the route much easier. The advice about the evening hours was especially useful - this is when the city reveals its aesthetics"
🔚 What's the bottom line?
Tbilisi is a city where medieval fortresses and 19th-century balconies naturally coexist with glass bridges and futuristic buildings. A walk through iconic places is not just a route, but a way to see how history and modernity intertwine into one living rhythm.
