Uplistsuli means the son of a lord in Georgian, hence the second name of the church: the Prince church. The root is the same as in neighbouring Uplistsikhe, the Lord fortress: both toponyms go back to the word upali, master.
This is the best key to understanding the valley: the lands along the Mtkvari between Gori and Mtskheta were long tied to rulers, and toponymy has kept that memory more precisely than any records. The church stands north of the Kvakhvreli rock complex, on the slope above the river.
The princely name is better read as a trace of old toponymy than as a confirmed historical episode: no dating has become attached to the building. The climb starts from the village, so wear closed shoes. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
