The church of St. John the Baptist stands in Patara Ateni village of Gori Municipality. Patara means small in Georgian: that is how the village is told apart from neighbouring Didi Ateni.
The village lies in the Ateni gorge, in the valley of the Tana river south of Gori. The gorge is known for its vineyards, and the famous Ateni Sioni stands further up the road.
The gorge road is narrow and runs above a drop in places, so it is worth driving without haste. Modest clothing is appropriate for a visit.
