The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Orbeliani Church, stands majestically in the center of the picturesque village of Didi Ateni, Shida Kartli region. This architectural masterpiece, built in the style of a cross-domed temple, attracts attention with its simplicity of form and exquisite use of green tuff and cobblestones.
Dating from the 7th to the 9th centuries, the temple surprises with its harmonious combination of symmetrical proportions and exquisite details. Each of its fortified arms has one window, and the octagonal isthmus of the dome creates a majestic architectural symmetry.
Particularly impressive is the skillfully executed dome, covered with skillfully carved flake stones, which emphasize the majesty of the structure. A testament to the times, the green tuff used to clad the neck of the dome in the 10th century adds a special charm to the temple.
The unusual door of the temple, decorated with inscriptions carved on green stones, mysteriously preserves its history, and the composition on the tympanum of the western door calls for prayer and blessing.
The southern door, topped with a mkhedruli, and the western extension, erected by priest David Davydov in 1870, add additional historical depth to the temple.
For travelers passionate about history and architecture, a visit to this majestic church will be an unforgettable experience, allowing you to plunge into the ancient and mystical atmosphere of Georgia, in which every stone tells its own story.
