The church of St. Anthony with a monastery stands at Kvemo Shuano in the south of Shida Kartli. Anthony the Great is venerated as the founder of monasticism, and houses in his name are found across the Orthodox world.
Kvemo in Georgian means lower, which is how this part of the area is told apart from the upper one. The spot lies far south of Khashuri, in the mountains, where the road climbs through gorges.
Modest clothing is appropriate in the monastery, and women may want a headscarf. The road here climbs on gravel, so dry weather makes the drive easier.
