The church of St. Barbara stands in the Ateni gorge south of Gori. In Georgia St. Barbara is called Barbare, and the feast in her honour is Barbaroba.
The gorge of the Tana river runs from Khidistavi towards Ateni and Boshuri. Further up the road stand the famous Ateni Sioni and a church named Svetitskhoveli.
Access is free at any time, and the road is unpaved in places. Modest clothing is appropriate, and the church deserves careful treatment.
