The Saint George sajvare here is combined with a naeklesiari: a devotional cross stands on the site of a former church. Such a combination is usual where the building has gone but the veneration remains.
The site lies about a kilometre from the church of John the Baptist in the settlement of Tsemi. Tsemi is part of the Borjomi resort district: coniferous slopes, mineral springs and villa building from the end of the century before last. Borjomi itself and the road to Bakuriani are both close.
Some mountain shrines carry local restrictions on entry, so check them on the spot. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- Leave offerings only according to local custom.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
