The fortress stands near the village of Tsagveri, Borjomi Municipality, above the Gujarula River, among the fortresses, ruins and castles of the region. Built in the 10th century, it's carved into the rock in such a way that from the road it reads as a single monolithic mass: on three sides the fortress appears impregnable, with a tall, curved tower adjoining the wall.

A fair warning about the visit is worth including. According to several independent reviews, the climb to the fortress is physically risky: the trail is dangerous in places, and at least one visitor turned back without completing it. It's worth pacing yourself realistically and avoiding unsuitable footwear or rainy weather. Litter is also visible on the grounds, and according to reviews, maintenance leaves something to be desired.
That said, the panorama over the valley from the summit remains the main reason to make the climb: according to reviews, the view is worth it, even given the difficulty of the route. We'd recommend leaving the car a little below the fortress and walking the final stretch on foot.
