Mamison Pass is one of the highest and most scenic passes in the Caucasus, at an elevation of about 2,911 metres, among the natural attractions of the region. The pass runs along the state border between Georgia and Russia, connecting the Racha region with North Ossetia, and retains strategic importance today.
A border permit is required to visit the pass. This is a restricted border zone, and the permit, free of charge and issued on the spot, is granted by border police in the town of Oni, the administrative centre of Oni Municipality in Racha. Confirm the current procedure in advance, as this is not an international crossing point into Russia, but a route through a regulated zone.
The Ossetian Military Road crosses the pass, known for its steep switchbacks, narrow sections and lack of paved surface. Due to avalanches and snow, the route is only accessible in the warmer months. The pass holds particular historical value for the ruins of ancient settlements and watchtowers: the village of Lisri once stood here, with dozens of defensive towers, some of which survive today.
