Church of St. George in Mravaldzali, Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti, Georgia

The Church of St. George in Racha, in the village of Mravaldzali, reveals to visitors not only its majestic architecture, but also a rich history dating back to the 11th century. It is assumed that its construction accompanied the founding of Rachin Saeristavo by Bagrat III in 1010. At that time, many significant structures were erected in Racha, including Nikortsminda, Patara Oni, Zemo Krihi, Khimshi and others.

Initially, the church was a modest hall building with subtle architectural forms, decorated with ornaments, lapidary inscriptions and paintings. However, in 1894, under Archpriest Mikhail Skhirtladze, it underwent significant changes and expansions. The new building became cross-domed, preserving only the eastern part of the original church.

In 1991, an earthquake caused serious damage to the 19th-century building, and the old part was also damaged. However, thanks to the rehabilitation work carried out by the Committee for the Protection of Monuments of the Ministry of Culture in 2007-2009, the temple was restored in all its glory.

The Church of St. George is decorated with exquisite 11th-century reliefs and lapidary inscriptions. Valuable relics were also kept here, including the helmet of Jalal ad-Din and the sword of Shah Abbas. This architectural monument is a living testimony of Georgian culture and history.
