The church is dedicated to the Archangel. In the Georgian tradition the archangels Michael and Gabriel are more often remembered together, and churches in their name were set in the mountains on prominent spots: the archangel was held to guard the road and the boundary of a village.
Shardometi lies between Oni and Ambrolauri, in the middle part of the Racha valley. Neighbours are enough here: the Trinity church of Parakheti stands about two kilometres away, the Archangel parish of Sori three, the church of St. George of the same Sori four. Oni is about nine kilometres away, Ambrolauri fifteen.
The road runs along the Rioni valley and is passable almost all year, with snow possible in winter. The church is a village one, services are not held every day, yet it can be seen from outside. Dress modestly and keep quiet inside. The valley here is wide and the neighbouring villages are visible from the road.
