Sakdari is the Georgian word for a church, and Zhaleti here is the name of the place that has stayed with it. The building is known as a three nave basilica: a long church without a dome, divided inside by two rows of piers, and it is linked to an icon of St George.
The second Zhaleti shrine, the ruins of a monastic complex, stands about two kilometres away, and the Lodebi church of St George in Sioni village almost four. The country is that of Tianeti, and the villages here are scattered across the hills.
The church is rural and its gates are opened by arrangement. The rules are the usual ones: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet. Both Zhaleti churches are conveniently seen in one trip, though the tracks between them are country ones.
