The Orthodox Annunciation church stands in Shatili, a mountain village of Khevsureti right by the Chechen border. It is the only church of ordinary, non-Khevsur design in the area.
Shatili is known for its tower fortress of slate houses grown together into a single stronghold. Two more local shrines lie on the slope beside the church; all three churches stand within a hundred metres of each other.
The road here runs over the Datvisjvari pass and is open only in the warm months. Plan the trip in advance and watch the forecast.
