The house is dedicated to the Beheading of John the Baptist. That day is a strict fast in the Georgian calendar, and churches of this dedication were usually raised in secluded places. The site is also referred to as a church, without a monastic community.
Tsodoreti lies in the hills east of Mtskheta, and the village holds several shrines. About a kilometre away stand the ruins of an old church, a little further the church of Machkhani, two kilometres off the monastery of St. Basil, and beyond the hill the monastery of Leloba near Tabaruki. Such a gathering of monasteries around one village is rare. Mtskheta is about twelve kilometres away.
The usual monastic rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf and skirt for women, quiet in the yard. Photography inside is not always welcome, and asking is easier than apologising. Daytime is the better hour to come.
