Batsara National Park is located in Akhmeta Municipality, Kakheti, on the right bank of the Alazani River, in the gorge of the Batsara River. It's one of ten protected areas in the region, gathered in the guide to Kakheti's national parks and reserves. The terrain rises from 700 to 2,000 metres above sea level, and the park covers more than 2,986 hectares.
The park was established in 1935 to protect relict groves of English yew, growing here in pure stands or alongside beech. Maple, ash and lime also appear in the forest. Yew groves of this scale, free of other species, are rare on a global scale, which shaped the area's protected status.
The park's fauna includes roe deer, pine martens, otters, brown bear, badger and chamois. Birds recorded here include griffon vulture, eagles, thrushes and Caucasian grouse. Management is combined with the neighbouring Babaneuri National Park under a single Batsara-Babaneuri protected areas administration.
