The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, the feast known in Georgia as Mariamoba and kept at the end of August. In Kakheti churches of the Virgin were raised both in villages and at the gates of the mountains, where the shepherd paths begin.
The place lies in the east of Telavi municipality, in the foothills above the Alazani valley, closer to Napareuli than to Telavi itself. The neighbours are well known: the Tornisi basilica of the Virgin about two kilometres away, the church of St. George of Lapankuri three, and from the same district the Mosorni church three kilometres to the south.
The road runs through the foothills, the last stretch unpaved, and in rain it is better walked. The usual rules of a Georgian church apply: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet inside.
