The church of Saint George stands in Lapankuri, a village in the northern part of Kakheti at the foot of the Caucasus range. The place is quiet and away from tourist routes, and people usually call in while travelling along the foothills.
The road along the foot of the range links a whole belt of villages in northern Kakheti: to the east lie Shilda with four church buildings and Eniseli, known for its wine-making, while to the west the climb begins towards Akhmeta and on to the Pankisi valley.
A village church may keep no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. The final stretch is a village road. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
