The church of Saint George in Shenako stands above two thousand metres, in the most recognisable village of Tusheti. Stone houses with slate roofs, the slopes of the Greater Caucasus around and the church above the village make up the view by which Tusheti is known from photographs.
The main thing to keep in mind when planning: the road into Tusheti crosses the Abano pass and is open only in the warm season, roughly from June to October. In winter access ceases and the residents come down to Kvemo Alvani at the foot of the mountains, where parish life continues all year. Further down the valley lies Omalo, the main village of Tusheti, and to the north begins the Pirikiti gorge with its tower village of Dartlo.
The pass is passable only by four-wheel drive: an ordinary car will not manage it. Travel with daylight to spare and check the weather in advance. The church doors are opened during daylight; dress with shoulders and knees covered.
