The salotsavi stands high in the Tusheti mountains, away from the inhabited tower villages. Local restrictions apply to such places in Tusheti: women are not expected to approach some shrines, and the rule is kept strictly.
Tusheti is part of Akhmeta Municipality and is cut off from the Alazani valley by the Abano pass, one of the highest road passes in Georgia. The road is open only a few months a year, and for the rest of the time the mountains are hard to reach. Tush shepherds winter in Alvani on the plain and return here with their flocks for the summer.
Do not touch ribbons, coins or offerings, as they are left on purpose. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Loud conversation is not welcome here.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
