The church of Saint George stands in Podaani, a village in eastern Kakheti. The ending -ani in Kakhetian toponyms usually points to an old origin of the name, and such names run in whole chains along this valley.
The neighbouring villages confirm the rule: Ozaani, Chikaani, Jugaani and Gurjaani lie in the same belt of the Alazani valley and carry names of one pattern. From here the road runs further east to Lagodekhi, where the oldest reserve in Georgia begins with its waterfalls and beech forests, and beyond it the Azerbaijani border.
The grounds are open around the clock, meaning free access to the churchyard rather than to the building itself: inside is entered for a service. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
