The church is known by a single word, sakdari: it carries neither a dedication nor a qualifying description. That happens often enough in Kakhetian villages, especially with small parishes standing away from the main streets.
Akhalsopeli stretches from south to north for several kilometres and holds four sanctuaries. This church stands in the northern part, while the church of John the Baptist is more than five kilometres to the south; between them lie a salotsavi of Saint George and another Saint George church. The village is in eastern Kakheti, between Kvareli and Gurjaani.
There are no regular services here and the site can be approached at any time. The four churches of the village stretch along the road, so walking between them takes a while and driving is wiser. The roads in the village are simple and mostly level; the trip needs no special preparation.
