Names like Mchedliaant are built on a transparent formula: the root of a family name plus a possessive ending, meaning the church of such and such a clan. Mchedeli means blacksmith in Georgian, and a widespread surname grew from that root.
Family churches were built and maintained by particular households, and they form a separate, almost domestic layer of Georgian church culture. Mukuzani is known above all as a wine microzone, one of the most decorated in Kakheti, but the village has several churches, and this is among the least noticed.
The building stands away from the centre, reached by an unpaved country road. There are no explanatory signs, so come to look. Dress soberly and treat the walls with care.
