The Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in Velistsikhe, approximately 250 meters north of the Kviratskhoveli Chapel. Both churches can be easily visited in one walk.
The building dates back to the 19th century. The church is a hall church, with walls constructed of alternating rows of river cobblestone and brick. There are two entrances, one on the south and one on the west, and a bell tower is added to the west. In 1989-1990, the church was renovated and re-roofed with tin, and it has been in use ever since.
Velistsikhe is one of the oldest and largest villages in Kakheti: approximately 4,500 residents, surrounded by the Alazani Plain, vineyards, and the road from Telavi to Bakurtsikhe runs right through the village.
