  • Description

Kvetera, or as it is also called Kvetari and Kueteri, is a pearl of the historical heritage of Georgia, located in picturesque Kakheti in the municipality of Akhmeta. This ancient fortress city, comfortably located on the right bank of the Ilto River, opposite Akhmet, is connected to it by an ancient highway through Tianeti. Just 12 km from Akhmet, Kvetera greets travelers with its majestic ruins and secrets of the past.

It includes a whole complex of historical buildings, among which stand out the inner castle, the lower fortress, a spacious fence, a magnificent palace, a church hall and, of course, the crown of the entire complex - the domed church, the main attraction of Kvetera.

The history of Kvetera goes back to the deep past, during the reign of Kvirike III at the beginning of the 11th century, although according to the famous historian Vakhushti Batonishvili, its origins can be traced back to the 8th century. This fortress city was one of the key centers of the Kakheti principality, which later became a kingdom. Unfortunately, from the 13th century, traces of city life in Kveter begin to fade, and it is gradually forgotten.

However, in 1968, archaeological excavations opened a new page in the history of Kvetera, revealing the remains of a hall church and many medieval objects, which are now stored in the Dusheti Archaeological Museum. These finds provided a unique insight into the life and culture of the ancient inhabitants.

Since 2007, Kvetera Castle has been included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which underlines its exceptional value and significance.

Kvetera is a place that comes to life before the eyes of an inquisitive traveler, leading him through the centuries. This is an ideal corner for historians, archaeologists, lovers of antiquities and simply adventure seekers. Immersion in the atmosphere of medieval Georgia, the stunning landscapes of Kakheti and the unique opportunity to touch the history that lives in every stone of this ancient fortress make Kvetera a must-see on the list of places to visit in Georgia.
