The church in Tobanieri is an ordinary Orthodox village building, one of hundreds across Imereti. Its value lies exactly in that ordinariness: it shows what a typical church site of the western Georgian plain looks like.
The village lies on the flat part of western Imereti, where the hills have already levelled out and Vani with its archaeological museum of the Colchian era is close at hand. The excavations at Vani uncovered rich burials of ancient Colchis.
No dating or detail has become attached to the building, so there is no antiquity to promise here. Come for the atmosphere of an Imeretian village: quiet, orchards, narrow lanes. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
