A church of the Nativity of John the Baptist. The dedication is more precise than usual: Georgia has many churches of John, but most are tied to the Beheading or to the Baptism of the Lord, while this one is named for the Nativity of the Forerunner, the feast at the end of June. In the folk calendar it falls at the height of summer and carries a whole layer of customs.
The church stands beside the Dormition one, literally sixty metres away, so on the ground this is almost certainly one church yard with two buildings. Vartsikhe lies in the Rioni valley south of Kutaisi, among the lowland villages of western Imereti. The century of building is not established.
The parish is rural and services are infrequent. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf. Both churches of the yard can be seen in a few minutes.
