  • Description

The Church of the Nativity of Christ, a magnificent architectural ensemble, is located in the heart of the picturesque Imereti region, in the cozy village of Katskhi, surrounded by green hills and gorges of the Katskhura River. Towering over the surrounding area, the temple impresses with its grandeur and rich history, dating back to the distant year 1032, when it was erected by order of the Georgian king Bagrat IV Kurapalata and his wife Helen, a relative of the Greek emperor Roman Argyris.

This sacred complex served not only as a place of worship, but also as a center of culture and education. Over the centuries, prayers have been heard here and hundreds of manuscripts have been created. The monastery library, which stored precious texts, became a sad victim of looting, but today the remains of its wealth can be seen in the State Museum of Georgia.

The architecture of the temple itself is amazing. The towering complex, first erected at the beginning of the 11th century, surprises with its originality and sophistication even today. It consists of several faceted parts, arranged in a stepped order and decorated with luxurious carvings. The temple is a unique architectural phenomenon that has no analogues in Georgian architecture.

One of the most remarkable features of this sacred place is the scene of the ascension of the cross by four angels, depicted on the terrace. This work of art, despite centuries and past “restorations,” continues to delight with its beauty and symbolism.

Visiting the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Katskhi is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Georgia, see the splendor of its architectural masterpieces and feel the spirit of ancient times enveloping this shrine.
