The church is called Argvetas Dedaghvtisa, the Virgin Mary church of Argveta. Dedaghvtisa is Georgian for the Mother of God, and Argveta is the name of the surrounding area.
The site lies by Gvankiti village, south of Terjola, on slopes above the river. Half a kilometre away stands a second Virgin Mary church, known as the Gvankiti one.
