The church at Buknari stands in the foothills of eastern Guria, between the plain and the ridge. Neither a dedication nor a date has become attached to the building.
Guria differs sharply from Kakheti in this respect: there almost every village is documented, while here most churches are known only by name and location. That does not make them less interesting, it simply calls for a different mindset: you come to look, not to check against a reference.
It is worth coming for those already travelling through the Gurian foothills and ready for a complete absence of infrastructure. Parts of the road are unpaved. Dress soberly and treat the walls with care.
