The Archangel monastery in Gantiadi is also known by a second name: the Chanieturi monastery, after the locality. Mtavarangelozi, the Archangel, is a dedication usually referring to Michael and Gabriel, the leaders of the heavenly host.
The name of the village deserves attention too: gantiadi means dawn in Georgian. This is one of the few monastic communities of western Guria, and against the village parishes around it stands out clearly in its way of life: here the day follows a monastic order rather than a parish one.
Modest dress is required, a headscarf for women, and voices kept low. Photographing the brethren without permission is not done. No dating has become attached to the community.
