In the very heart of picturesque Adjara, in the vicinity of Zendidi, the majestic Zandidi fortress is located. Information about the exact date of its origin is shrouded in mystery, but, apparently, this fortress rose in the late Middle Ages, remaining a closed centuries-old testimony of history. Spread over an inaccessible mountain in the northern part of the Ked region, the fortress creates a majestic ensemble surrounded by dense forests of the Kalaskuri ridge.

This place, called “Konakhi” by local residents in the Gurian dialect, which can be translated as “stable” or “dwelling,” represents not only a historical heritage, but also the territory of the residential courtyard of the Bezhanidze family. The look at the fortress walls surrounding this architectural masterpiece is admirable, and its total area is impressive - 6000 m2 on a rocky massif, which blends perfectly with the surrounding nature.

The Zendi fortress, as a historical monument, played an important role in protecting the Ked region and controlling the central strategic trade routes leading to the gorge. Today, majestic fence walls, mysterious towers, formidable gates and rooms for various purposes have been preserved on its territory. Fragments of rectangular buildings in the eastern part and the remains of a tower and water tank in the western part create an atmosphere of mystery and the times of the magnificent Middle Ages.

The Zendi Fortress, built from wild stones and lime mortar, is not only a testament to the skill of medieval builders, but also a place where history, nature and architectural heritage come together in an amazing symbiosis.
