  • Description

In Adjara, in the municipality of Keda, where the Adzharistskali and Agaristskali rivers meet, the majestic Tsivasula Fortress rises. Its location in the upper part of the area, called Tsivasoula (which can be translated as “always cold”), gives this historical place a mysterious charm. This fortress, with its roots in the 11th-13th centuries, was an integral part of the strategic plan, controlling the Adjaristskali gorge and the roads leading to Agariskali.

The majestic rocky cape on which the fortress rises offers breathtaking views. The inaccessibility of the fort adds to the mystery - only from the northwestern side can you reach it along a narrow path. Despite its modest size of 400 m², the fortress inspires with strength and historical grandeur.

The fortress walls, built from wild stone, take their shape from the contours of the rock, creating a unique and impressive appearance. Today, despite temporary trials, the northern and southern walls, as well as the upper part of the eastern wall, have been preserved. Particularly impressive is the north-eastern wall, rising up to 5.5 meters, with a thickness of 0.7-0.8 meters.

Inside the fortress you can find the ruins of buildings for various purposes, and on the southwestern side there is a water reservoir carved into the rock. At the highest point of the rock system stands a tower, presumably two stories high, with numerous recesses for wooden beams. Remains of a fence have been preserved on the north and south sides of the tower, and in the walls of the fence you can find niches for surveillance and carved loopholes in the south wall.

A visit to the Tsivasoul Fortress is an immersion in historical drama, where the stone walls tell you thousand-year-old stories about strategic battles and everyday life. Archeology lovers and curious travelers should take the northwest trail to experience the grandeur of this place, where past eras intertwine with modernity.
