The church of St. Theodore Tiron on Iverian Mountain is a small church by the ancient walls of the Anakopia fortress above New Athos. People climb here for a rare pairing: a working holy place inside an antique and medieval citadel, with one of the best panoramic views of the whole coast.
Iverian Mountain is often called the main viewpoint of New Athos, and the small church remains its spiritual heart. The way up is part of the experience: the hairpins of the path, the fortress gates, the tiers of walls, and at the top the church, the towers and the sea to the horizon.
The climb is on foot and takes about an hour: bring water and comfortable shoes, and in summer start early, before the heat. By the church one behaves as in a working church: quietly, in modest dress, without filming those at prayer.
