The Akvacha temple is a small ancient sanctuary in the hills north-east of New Athos, attributed to the sixth century. There are no plaques, no tours and no tickets here: the history reads straight in the rough stone masonry, and this artlessness is the chief charm of the place.
Akvacha village lies away from the main highway, among green hills above the coast. It is worth the drive for those who love spiritual heritage without fences and signposts: quiet yards, old walls, mountain air and a complete absence of bustle.
The visit passes in the open air and takes little time: there are no regular services, and one can walk up at any hour. The fifteen-century-old masonry asks for care: no climbing on the walls and no handling of the stones.
