ჯუმას მეჩეთი: რთული ბედი, დიდი მისია
In the center of Tbilisi, next to the Narikala fortress, there is the only Islamic temple in Georgia, the Juma Mosque. Georgia of the XVIII century is a mixture of nations, cultures and confessions.
At the intersection of trade routes, the interests of different peoples intersected. The history of the Juma mosque begins in the middle of the XVIII century. The Ottomans built it in 1735. Five years later, the Persians destroyed the mosque. In the middle of the XIX century, the temple was restored, and at the end of the century it was destroyed.
The Juma Mosque, built anew in 1911, still stands today. The temple has only one minaret and an architectural feature: a combination of the Islamic style of temple architecture with neo-Gothic.
The main advantage and pride of the Juma Mosque is that Sunnis and Shiites pray here together.
Representatives of different Islamic movements have different temples and rules of religious rites, but it so happened that the temple of the Tbilisi Shiites was destroyed and the Sunnis took them under their roof.
The glorious history of the Juma Mosque has acquired a conciliatory mission, enriching the history of Islam.
