Georgian citizens in the top 10 applicants for asylum in Germany: new changes in legislation.

Georgia ranks sixth in terms of the number of asylum requests in Germany, according to the Migration Service. Ahead are countries such as Syria, Turkey, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, which generated about half of the applications.

However, Germany recognized Georgia as a safe country in December 2023. This means that Georgian citizens will no longer be granted asylum for no real reason, and the deadline for reviewing applications will be shortened. An agreement on the readmission of illegal citizens is already in force between Georgia and Germany, and 1,486 Georgian citizens were expelled from Germany from January to September 2023.

Since March 2017, Georgian citizens have been granted the right to visa-free short-term trips to the countries of the Schengen area for tourist, business and guest visits. However, the Georgian authorities have repeatedly urged their citizens to comply with the rules of stay in the EU countries, since violation of these rules may jeopardize the visa-free regime.

To prevent illegal migration to other countries, the Georgian authorities have taken a number of measures. They have tightened the legislation against violators of the requirements of the visa-free regime with the EU countries. In addition, all expenses related to the readmission of Georgian citizens are now borne by the citizens themselves. The procedure for changing the surname has also been tightened, and criminal penalties have been introduced for facilitating illegal migration.
