The Avtandariani monastery stands near Martqopi. It is one of the two monastic communities in this selection: the other, dedicated to St Gregory of Khandzta, lies far to the south in Bolnisi Municipality.
Martqopi is known above all for the Martqopi monastery, one of the oldest in eastern Georgia, and pilgrims come here constantly. Avtandariani stands away from the main flow, in the hills above the village.
Monastic rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and no photography inside without asking. The climb to the community runs along a mountain road, and it is better to come in dry weather.
